The Mermaid of Zennor - 2014

Long ago a mermaid used to visit St Senara's Church in Zennor in Cornwall to hear the choir sing.  Her own voice was so sweet that she enticed Mathey Trewella, the son of the churchwarden, to come away with her.    Neither of them was ever seen on dry land again, and the famed 'mermaid chair' in St Senara's Church is the same bench on which the mermaid used to sit and sing, opposite Mathey Trewella in the singing loft.

This sculpture was carved from a coarse grained limestone called Ancaster Limestone.

The Mermaid of Zennor is 19" high, and the base measures 9.5" x 6.25".  It weighs 22kg or 48.5lbs.
